My Artist Book

I'm planning to make my artist book look like this one.
My book is going to be about human emotions. Particularly how words can make us feel. This book is going to consist of inspirational quotes and beautiful poetry from a range of poets.

I have chosen this theme as I pay a lot of attention to emotions, body language and feelings. Also this is the main theme that I usually base my artwork on.

Book size and orientation: A5, landscape

Charcoal on paper. Dimensions 8x6.

Dip pen and Ink drawing

Dip pen and Ink drawing. (This drawing is about postcard size.)

I am pretty happy with how this drawing turned out. I love the moody effect Parker's ink gives!

Sketch For Copper Plate Drypoint Etching

This sketch is based around the theme of living and moving things. What you are seeing is various animals encircled around a face of a human in a ribbon form.

Self-portrait Sketch

Grey lead pencil (HB) on paper.
I drew this 3 years ago. Not a bad job for the first sketch of myself!

Practicing my charcoal techniques. I am very happy with how this turned out. I'm proud that it turned out to look more 3- dimensional than my previous drawings, I love the shadows and contrast.

On May the 26th I went to the 'Digital show' at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre. I had the best time. I was stunned the moment I walked into the large hall, and all I saw was cameras, cameras and more cameras! I learnt some very interesting and helpful tips to further my career in Photography as well as getting the best equipment that would be needed. I listened and watched two demonstrations on new programs that out-do Photoshop in so many ways and I ended up buying one of the programs which is called 'Color Effex Pro 4'. This program is so much simpler and time efficient than Photoshop and it does just about everything Photoshop can do and much more, very exciting can't wait to try it out!
The Photography exhibited was stunning and very inspiring.

Bill Henson Controversy

I am absolutely disgusted with the people who believe that Bill Henson's photos are not art and are more like pornography. His photos are very artistic and creative. I agree with 'Anthony Bond' (6:43), where he said that Henson wasn't trying to portray something pornographic and didn't intend bringing on the controversy, he was interested on bringing out a poetic image. I am completely against what 'Hetty Johnston' (2:44) says through the video, no his art is not portraying children/teenagers in a sexual context!
Also, it was said in the video (5:35) "But why after so many years of similar work being on public display is there now so much public disquiet." This is what I want to know also.

May I just point out that there is a difference between 'nude' and 'naked'. Henson's photographic art are 'artistic nudes', NOT 'NAKED' and DEFINITELY NOT 'PORNOGRAPHIC'!
Although both the labels fit the meaning of the full figure being revealed, 'naked' is more out in the open and ostentatious where as 'nude' is the opposite. It suggests subtlety and privacy, successful nudes use lighting and posture to grasp the shape and form of the subject and this is what Henson does extremely well in his photography.

Also quite importantly, Henson did get consent from the models and their parents/guardians to produce this art and they obviously said it was ok, so why is this such a big deal?

People should just believe what Henson said about his images (1:19) "I think that the period between ... childhood and adolescence or, you know adolescence in itself is ... a really interesting period, it's a bridge between the world of childhood and the adult world. That thing of having one foot in the world of childhood and one foot in the adult world produces a certain uneasiness, a certain disposition, which I find really interesting.". This is what he was thinking of and basing his photos on. Nothing pornographic of the sort!

First Photography Studio Experience

My first time using photographic studio/equipment and I felt like I owned the place! That is where I belong! Also I was very happy with the way my photos turned out.

This photo above I liked the most. To make the photo look like this I changed the photo to 'black and white' and then added a sepia tint on photo shop, apart from that I didn't edit the photo that much more. This shot was just one of those lucky photos a photographer can get from time to time and be happy with it just after the moment it has been shot!
With this photo I used coloured gels against the harsh lights (flood light etc). A little bit of direction here and there for my model and assistants and this is what came out of it!

PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS

SALVADOR DALI DOCUMENTARY

Gallery Exhibitions

A month ago I went and saw two exhibitions at the NGV International gallery, one was the Light Works exhibition and the other was the European art exhibition.

The Light Works exhibition is a contemporary photography exhibition that looks at various artists ways of working with light, a key element in the birth of photography. There was one photo in particular taken by  Hiroshi Sugimoto who did a gelatin silver photograph that had a very interesting technique to developing and creating that image.
My favourites were Hiroshi Sugimoto's photograph and Bill Henson's photography.I found Henson's photography really captivating and dramatic. This exhibition is truly magnificent. Even though it is small, it is very inspiring and thorough of showing various artists abilities that have imaginative ways with light.

The European art exhibition just blows you away. It shows art from between the 1500s- 1800s, particularly in the Baroque style. The richness of colour and the meticulous brushstrokes really captured me. The presentation of this exhibition was amazing, I felt like I was a part of the images in a way. This exhibition left me with goose bumps and my hairs on the back of my neck standing, it was that great.
This link shows one of Henson's photos that is shown in the Light Works exhibition:
Bill Henson, Untitled 1990-91, type C photograph
These two links show just two of the many paintings that are shown in the European art exhibition:

Useful website for wedding photography

I found this website very useful as I would like to become a professional wedding photographer in the future. When I was reading this article I noticed that I already do some of the things the writer had advised beginners to do, I am happy to know that I am heading in the right direction!

Here's the link to the article, check it out if you're interested to.

'Marriage In Spotlight' One of my etchings. The image is a photo of my Mother and Father on their wedding day.
(completed in 2011)

My landscape lino print I did in print-making. It has four colours, black, white, blue and red.
(completed in 2012)

My black and white lino print I did in print-making class.
(completed in 2012)

These are my original drawings. First one is an ink pen drawing and the second is a colour pencil drawing. They are both the same idea, however with the second one I added mechanical arms that are trying to grab the woman. This piece is meant to represent a dream, the woman is having a dream, she is dreaming that she just woke up and turned half robot, half human.
I got my inspiration from a manga drawing book. In the original image the human girl is looking into a mechanical looking mirror and her reflection is a robot, a small robot stands next to the mirror as if telling her to look at her reflection.

Grey lead pencil drawing. I got inspiration from a presentation sheet that comes in those frames that you can buy. Except the other one had an older man throwing a little boy in the air, so I changed it to a younger man throwing a little girl in the air. I drew the girl from my imagination.
Caricatures I did of my friends.

These are my original life drawings that I did last year.

Charcoal and Grey lead pencil life drawing. This is my version of Isabel Hutchison's life drawing. I drew the body to look more fuller and younger. You may notice that the face also doesn't look the same, I deliberately drew the face to look more round and plump.

'Adrie' grey lead pencil sketch, a portrait of my father. I decided to change his facial expression from a smile to worried/ sad to create more interest.
Inspiration:
'self-portrait 1993' Kevin Lincoln, Drawn from life- dry point etching

'Untitled' Charcoal, oil pastel and hard pastel drawing.
'Mime vs Joker', my colour pencil drawing.

Inspiration:
My photo- 'Mime vs Joker' photo shoot 2011 (Make-up done by- Alexandra Janssens)

This is also one of my paintings, acrylic on canvas, 36x47cm. I don't have a name for it yet, but i'm working on it. I got the idea to do this straight from my imagination, at the time I knew there was an artist who did artworks where people were made out of fruit and vegetables but I couldn't remember who. I finally realised in my digital design class at tafe that the artist who did that was Giuseppe Arcimboldo. So I guess he has turned out to be a huge inspiration for this painting.

This is my painting that I painted last year. It's called 'The Mimes Dream', acrylic paint on canvas, 50.8x 76.2.  I used my photo as a reference my friend/model was dressed up as a mime, so i decided to copy the pose that he did in the photo.

Salvador Dali was my main inspiration for this piece. Particularly the paintings 'Daddy Long Leg's in the evening' and 'Metamorphosis of Narcissus'. I tried to mimic his 'liquid' effect.

(Photo- part of Late November 2011 photo shoot) I really liked this photo as it is dramatic and has an intensity to it. With this photo shoot (Late November 2011 photo shoot) I focused a lot on lighting. This photo reminds me of some of Bill Henson's photography.

This photo I am also very proud of. I love the tonal values and colours it worked out just as I planned. I love how he managed to pull off a sense of vulnerability but also I think strength and courage show as well. This is also a photo that is apart of the latest November 2011 photo-shoot that I did. You'll also notice that my drawing of this photo is below.
This is a portrait photo of my friend who was one of my main models for my photography. The photo is a part of a photo-shoot that I had done in November last year. I was very proud of how well this photo-shoot turned out. What I love about this photo is the intensity of the mood, and I mean when you look at him in particular all you see is a blank stare but I think that his expression shows so much more than just a stare, it's quite powerful actually, there is sadness and emptiness expressed. There is a sense of deep thought and possibly like he is grieving.
